Professional Philosophy: Life is too short to do something you don’t love.
One of my Professional Goals: To write a book and have it published.
How I Got Started in This Field: I was designing custom communication interfaces for patients who had quadriplegia and Locked-In syndrome. If you have seen or read The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, these were my patients. I would assess their needs, cross them with what was available technologically, and then iterate and refine the systems with the patient until they worked perfectly for that patient. It was the ultimate User-Centered Design. After that, I learned HTML and eventually moved from healthcare to the Web industry. As I’m fond of saying, the Internet had not been invented when I graduated from High School and was choosing a college major!
Best Professional Book I’ve Ever Read: Although it is not about User Experience, the book Radical Careering by Sally Hogshead had a tremendous (positive) impact on my career.
