COX Enterprises
As a leading communication, automotive, and media conglomerate, Cox Enterprises was planning a company-wide reorganization within all areas of human capital to improve operational efficiencies and increase their responsiveness to the increased market demands.
Challenge
Cox Enterprises needed a strategy and plan for this multi-year program. To develop the strategy our team conducted user research across the divisions to better learn and understand the commonalities and differences in needs and work practices. These insights led to a customer experience strategy that was “employee-centric”. We then developed guiding principles that directed the tactical planning and creating of a 3-year roadmap that was prioritized on the goals of the employees and the business.
Solution
It may be evident that the best starting point is to have a clear “vision” that can be easily communicated and shared. The tricky part is how to create a workable plan around the implementation of the vision. One way we’ve seen this accomplished is through the use of a Strategic Roadmap. A Strategic Roadmap is a visual representation of the strategy that helps communicate the approach in a clear and concise way that can be easily understood by many stakeholders. When everyone understands the approach, it can be put to work more effectively. A Strategic Roadmap is more than just a pictorial view of the plan; it also communicates the data that supports the approach to provide merit and rationale behind the strategic business decisions.
Results
The prototyped design that came out of the JAM session was used to develop the new Harvest Mobile application. In addition, John Deere adopted the JAM session process to use on future projects. One key aspect of this was the integration of the approach into an Agile Scrum framework. This was accomplished by embedding the JAM within their core product lifecycle where the JAM is part of pre-Sprint planning and deployed as needed.
